Services and expertise

I started off my career in financial services as a pensions and employee benefits adviser; first at Noble Lowndes and then within the actuarial depertment of Coopers & Lybrand.  I am a Fellow of the Pensions Management Institute.

When the pensions mis-selling crisis hit the news in the early 90s I was well placed to help the regulators and firms deal the resulting issues.  I worked with the Securities and Investments Board (SIB) in drafting the original guidance for the industry wide review.

Subsequently I helped firms, insurance companies, investment managers and IFAs deal with some of the practical issues and problems arising from the review.  The worked covered included:

  • Helping firms set policy. I sat on numerous steering committees overseeing firms' pension review project
  • Conducting Quality Assurance checks
  • Advising on provisioning methodologies
  • Undertaking due diligence investigations are part of M&A assignments
  • Facilitating the provision of specialist resoucing (eg outsoucers, actuarial input for loss and redress calculations, project management)
  • Designing and conducting training for review teams.

I sat on the FSA/ABI Clearing House which looked at ways of stream-lining the pension review process and addressing bottlenecks impeding progress with the review.

Subsequent to the pensions review I have been activily involved in numerous other product reviews and customer conduct programmes covering mortgage endowments, SIPPs, SCARPS, and latterly mortgage advice and PPI.  I have also helped firms address broader remedial action required of the back of FSA Risk Mediation Programmes.

Quality Assurance

I can provide comfort to your executives and the Board on the adequacy of all aspects of Conduct of Business including:

  • Systems and controls
  • Sales standards (this can include a review of processes and procedures, training arrangements, and mystery shopping exercises)
  • Compliance and monitoring arrangements
  • Complaints handling
  • Financial promotions.

I can undertake work in response to any FSA enquiry - I have experience of FSA skilled persons (S166) investigations - or as part of a due diligence process in M&A work (purchaser or vendor due diligence).

Remedial activity

Over the past 17 years I have been involved in numerous remedial activity ranging from pension and mortgage endowment reviews to, latterly, mortgage and Payment Protection Insurance (PPI). Some have been under the auspices of an FSA investigation (s166 skilled persons review) others voluntary reviews in response to FSA concerns or following root-cause analysis on complaints.

My input has covered;

  • Project management
  • Conducting file reviews an opining on sales and record keeping standards
  • Guidance and advice relation to policy
  • Designing and overseeing customer contact programmes
  • Quality assurance
  • Liaising with management and the regulator

The key to the success of any remedial programme is to ensure there is a healthy, open dialogue with the regulator so that the exercise addresses the main TCF and customer detriment concerns in an efficient, proportionate manner.

I have a wide network of experienced, respected  regulatory experts and for larger assignments I can bring together a top team of independent consultants.  Additionally, I have excellent working relationships with leading outsourcers and can facilitate the delivery of resources and broader support including specialist skills (eg actuarial support) where necessary.

Broader regulatory support

Interim management

With over 30 years experience in the financial services industry, I am an ideal choice for interim management support  to cover short-term resource challenges for your compliance, complaints, customer services departments or indeed other related teams (I have acted as the pensions managers for a big 4 accountancy firm).

I have managed large teams and I am accustomed to supervising, appraising, developing and motivating diverse teams.  You will find me a flexible, cost effective solution.
